research plan (Cheung Lick Keung, Joe)
Cheung Lick Keung, Joe
Research Topic:
To find the relationship between the usage of ICT during class and students’ mathematics academic results.
Research Questions:
1) Does ICT enhance students’ learning in Mathematics in secondary school?
2) What are students’ attitudes about using ICT during Mathematics lessons?
Why is the topic important to be studied?
In the 21st century, modern society is undergoing many profound and rapid technological changes. Among these changes are the invention and rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT). ICT is affecting all areas of society. Getting the information from the discussion document of Right technology at the Right Time for the Right Task, the Hong Kong SAR government has invested 7.2 billions in IT in Education. A few years ago, teachers were trained to achieve different levels of IT competency. We had adequate software and hardware inside all public schools. The shakeholders had a more positive attitude towards using IT for teaching and learning. Based on my past 8 years’ experience, compared with ordinary teaching, using ICT can be a better tool to arouse students’ interests in learning Mathematics. Exchanging ideas between teachers and students, they can learn and teach interactively during class or even after school. Moreover, we can invent some interactive software for students to use.
Samples and sampling method :
Participants
In this study, two Secondary Four Mathematics classes are chosen for the research. Class A and B have 39 and 41 students respectively. One as control group and the other act as examined group. Using a practitioner action research as methodology, where I am a practitioner, researcher and participant in the study. Another Mathematics Teaching Assistant is an observer.
Design
The design of this study is mainly qualitative, with a small part quantitative. I act as a researcher and carry out the first person analysis of the data. I have tailor-made four topics in the first term. The experiment will divide into four phases: from September to December, each phase carries one month. After every period of learning, two classes will undergo the same mathematics test. Marks will be measured. The experiment wants to know whether IT would give positive relationship between students’ academic results and the usage of ICT.
To know about students’ attitudes towards ICT, questionnaires and class observation will be done.
How will the data be collected and analyzed ?
The students’ progress will be studied by comparing the Pre- and Post-test results of both groups and analyzed by the significance t-test respectively.

Research Plan (Ying Ngai Andrew)
Research Topic
The effectiveness of using English Weblog writing to promote writing of the English language in primary schools of Hong Kong.
Research Questions
1.Can English Weblog writing possibly upgrade the writing ability of the English language in primary schools of Hong Kong?
2.Is there any relationship between English Weblog writing habit and the English language writing skill of primary students?
3.What are the differences of the effectiveness of using English Weblog writing and traditional English diary writing toward the writing ability of English language in primary schools of Hong Kong?
Participants and how are they selected.
Participants: 60 students with similar English writing level
Slide 2 Why is this important topic to study
BBC defined Blogging is a way of collecting links to web pages and sharing thoughts and ideas with people online. They are basically online journals or diaries which are great for sharing information and ideas. Blogger said, “A blog is a personal diary. A daily pulpit. A collaborative space.”
Recently, the EDB of Hong Kong is promoting using Weblog to Promote Reading and Writing of the English Language in Primary Schools. Professional trainings are provided to teachers in order to help them to realize how Weblog (or Blog) could be used to promote students' interest in reading and writing of the English Language.(EDB,2008)
Hopefully, this test may give an insight into the effectiveness of using Weblog writing to promote writing of the English language in primary schools of Hong Kong.
Slide 3 How will data be collected and analyzed
Duration: 1 semester (Sept to Feb)
Pre-test: English writing test1 (School Mid-term English Exam)
- Experiment Group A: 20 students (random selected) write about their daily life on their own Blog (about 100words) and post them to the public every school day (lunch break). Teachers will mark their works on the comment page of their Blog once week.
Experiment - Group B: 20 students (random selected) write about their daily life on their own diary (about 100words) every school day (lunch break). Teachers will mark their works on their diary once week.
- Control Group: 20 students (random selected)
Pro-test: English writing test2 (School Final Exam)
Compare and analyze the result of the pre-test (School Mid-term English Exam) and pro-test (School Final Exam) by SPSS. The score may indicate if there is significant relationship between the Blog writing and the writing skills of students.

Task 6 Summary of a Case Study
The research titled "A case study of teachers' perception on ICT implementation in a
primary school: Implications for the change" which was written by N. L. Ma as her mater thesis.
http://sunzi1.lib.hku.hk/hkuto/view/B31962166/ft.pdf
This dissertation aims at investigating teachers' perception of ICT integration into the
school and its implications for change. The main focus is on how teachers perceive
the use of ICT in teaching and learning, and how teacher professionals, school
leadership and school culture affect teachers' perceptions.
This is a case study of the researcher's school, employing qualitative methods to 4 participating interviewees in the school. The characteristics of this method are to study through the native perspectives.
The Case Study suggested 3 factors which are important to sustain teacher’s willingness to integrate ICT into their school,
1. continuous professional development opportunities
2. collegiality and collaboration
3. supportive leadership
Research questions:
Question 1. How do teachers perceive the use of ICT in teaching and learning?
Question 2. How does teacher professional development affect teachers' perceptions?
Question 3. How does school leadership affect teachers' perceptions?
Question 4. How does school culture affect teachers' perceptions?
The significance of the study is to provide some possible suggestions for educators to implement any new policies in schools in the future. It is also hoped that the findings may be helpful to teachers, schools and policy makers regarding the implementation and devising of strategies to support change in schools.
We learned the structure of a case study after reading this case study.
